Copper vs. PEX Repiping: An Honest Comparison
It's the first question every repipe customer asks us — and the answer matters less than most websites make it sound. Here's the straight version, from a crew that installs both.
The Quick Answer
Both copper and PEX are excellent repipe materials when they're installed correctly, and both are fully approved under California plumbing code. We install both, we don't earn more on one than the other, and both have decades-long track records in Los Angeles-area homes. So the choice isn't "good versus bad" — it's a matter of your priorities and your budget. PEX generally costs less, installs faster with fewer wall openings, and flexes with seismic movement. Copper costs more, has a century-long track record, tolerates heat and sunlight, and some homeowners simply prefer metal. The Case for Copper
Copper has been the premium standard for a reason. It's proven across a full century of American plumbing, it shrugs off heat, and it doesn't care about sunlight — which matters for the exposed pipe runs common on older Glendale and Burbank homes, where a water line may cross a crawlspace vent or run up an exterior wall. It's naturally resistant to bacterial growth, it can't be chewed by rodents, and when you sell the house, "full copper repipe" is a line that buyers and inspectors respect instinctively.
The tradeoffs are cost and installation invasiveness. Copper prices float with the metals market, and rigid pipe demands more wall and ceiling openings to route, which means more drywall patching afterward. Soldered joints are also only as good as the person holding the torch — one more reason installer quality matters more than material choice.
One honest local note: in our hard water, copper is not immune to trouble. Aggressive water chemistry and excessive velocity can contribute to pinhole leaks in copper over the long term. It's uncommon and usually avoidable with correct pipe sizing, but "copper" doesn't mean "forever, guaranteed."
The Case for PEX
Cross-linked polyethylene has earned its place fast. Because it's flexible, PEX runs in long continuous pulls with far fewer fittings — and fewer joints means fewer potential leak points, all of it routed with a fraction of the wall openings a copper repipe requires. That translates to a quicker job, less patching and repainting, and a lower total price. For occupied homes, the difference in disruption is real: a typical PEX repipe has your water back on the same day.
Seismic performance deserves special mention in this area. Homes on the Verdugo foothills sit in earthquake country, and when the ground moves, flexible tubing rides the motion instead of fighting it. Rigid pipe concentrates stress at its joints; PEX bends and returns. It also won't burst in a freeze, laughs at hard-water scale thanks to its smooth interior, and is immune to the electrolytic corrosion that eats metal pipe.
Its limits are equally real: PEX cannot be exposed to sunlight for long (UV degrades it), must keep a safe distance from water heater flues and other high-heat sources, and — being younger than copper — carries a track record measured in decades rather than a century. Quality varies by manufacturer too, which is why we install established brands with proven fitting systems, not whatever is cheapest that week.
The Hybrid Approach: Often the Best of Both
This isn't actually an either/or decision, and many of our repipes use both materials where each is strongest: PEX for the long runs through walls, ceilings, and crawlspaces where its flexibility and price shine, with copper stub-outs at fixtures and copper near the water heater where rigidity, heat tolerance, and a clean finished look matter. You get most of the cost and speed advantages of PEX with copper at every point you'll ever actually see or touch. What Matters More Than the Material
Here's the part the material-war articles skip: the difference between a good and bad repipe almost never comes down to copper versus PEX. It comes down to the installer. The things worth interrogating are:
- Permits and inspection. A legitimate repipe is permitted with the city and signed off by an inspector. Unpermitted work haunts you at sale time.
- Pressure testing before closing walls. Every joint verified under pressure, before a single patch goes on.
- Proper sizing and routing. Correct pipe diameter for your fixture count, secured runs, protection plates, and code-required clearances.
- Who patches the walls. Get it in writing whether drywall repair and texture-matching are included, or you'll be hiring a second contractor.
- A workmanship guarantee from a licensed, insured contractor who will still answer the phone in five years.
